Last night i was dj'ing and hosting at WILD FRUIT in Brighton with my 2 fave sista's Tasty Tim and Boy George. We had all been looking forward to working together as we have all been friends for so long but never worked as a trio. I spent 3 hours painting my face in the afternoon and waited for my friend from New York to arrive , Miss Peppermint. Pepper is a drag queen with a great voice , a new album out and 3 of the best backing dancers i have ever seen , she was doing a show before George hit the decks and her energy always gets the crowd going so would work great before he started.
Pepper and myself were travelling down with George and Craig his brother in law. At 9 we went round to George's house in Hampstead for a cuppa and a chat before setting off. George has been off cigarettes for 9 days and is doing really well , i however still smoke like a chimney and George's new smoke free home was a new one to me ! He does have a beautifull pagoda in his back garden however so it was peacefull sitting in there having a quiet fag before what i knew was going to be a big night out for us all. George has been doing a lot of writing for other artists of late so he played me some of the new tracks which are more pop orientated than some of his recent writing. Being an utter pop tart i loved em ! One song in particular absolutely blew me away. I am not at liberty to say who its for but she is a massive star and i think its great that George's obvious song writing genius is being taken seriously by artists of her calibre ! There was also 2 new mixes of Amazing Grace which George wanted to play out that night. Kinky Roland is a talent and has done an amazing club version of the song.
George finished painting his face and by 10.30 we were ready to roll. I am used to the Brighton journey as i made it every week for years when i was working at "Revenge" but it can get a bit boring. We livened it up by telling vile jokes and listening to Peppers album , which George seemed to love.believe me if he didnt like it we wouldnt have sat and listened to it all ! We were all in great moods by the time we got there and even though we were a bit late no one seemed to mind.
After settling in and having a drink or 2 (George was on water , i was on Whiskey !) i introduced Pepper and her boys to the stage and they went down a storm with the young and mainly gay crowd. Then it was George's turn to hit the decks and also my own in the Pop room. I noticed that there was a woman who kept taking loads of pictures of him and he asked her to calm down a bit as he was trying to work. He had a whole new set of songs and i know from experience it can be nerve racking playing new stuff and mixing it all up in front of a big crowd so i guess she was just getting on his nerves a bit. I told her to back off a bit but she ignored me. She didnt ignore him however when he politely but strongly told her to "go away" ... LOL !
I get photographed quite a lot myself but nowhere near as much as George so know it can be quite annoying when your speaking to a friend or trying to work and someone is pulling and pushing at you for a picture. He always obliges though and 99% of the time is sweetness and light. I wouldnt be i dont think. My fuse is obviously shorter than his. He always says that he doesnt mind as long as people are polite and ask which is very reasonable i think.
The night seemed to fly by and before i knew it we were all in the car again and driving home to a sing along ! George dropped us off in Kings Cross where i live and popped in to see my newly decorated living room which he hadnt seen yet and described it as looking like a dolls house , which made me laugh cos it does ! LOL. He picked up a hat of mine he is wearing for a big shoot this week too. So for those who think he should dress up more you wont be dissapointed.
George is in a brilliant state of mind at the moment. More so than i have EVER seen him infact. He is sharp , witty , funny , fun loving and very collected . Working hard on new projects and new material and looking forward to getting back on stage again and doing what he has always done best. Its a pleasure to spend time with him again after the dark drug years. Thats a place i believe he will never go again. Its all good stuff from now on!
